Photo Stock & Assignments
In the past decade, publishers have licensed nearly 3,000 of
my photos.
Magazine clients include American Forests, American Gardener, Consumer’s Research, Country Living, Family Circle, Fine Gardening, Garden Design, Garden Gate, Horticulture, Hudson Home & Garden, Mother Earth News, National Geographic Kids, National Geographic Traveler, Native Plants, Orion, Parade, Ranger Rick, and various Meredith and Harris special magazines.
Book publishers include Boyds Mills Press, Brooklyn Botanic Garden, Cool Springs Press, Creative Homeowner, Meredith, Mitchell Beazley, Rodale, Storey, and Wiley. I am the principal photographer of seven books, including my own Deer-Resistant Landscaping, Plus Strategies for Outwitting 20 Other Pesky Mammals, which includes 400 of my mammals, deer-resistant plants, and how-tos. I photographed the children’s books Panda: A Guide Horse for Ann and Gardening for Kids (in production),
for which the kids and their gardening teacher awarded me a certificate for “Photography, Patience, Patience & Patience.” Specialties include Gardening, Nature, Wildlife, Home How-to, Travel, Remarkable People, Funny Signs, and Funny Faces in Nature (small selection shown at bottom here).
Formats: I began shooting digitally in spring 2006. Earlier stock is available either as scans from slides to your specifications or as fine-grain Fuji Velvia slides. I prefer working in outdoor ambient light but also shoot with studio lighting. I have collaborated with wildlife photographers Lennie & Uschi Rue (whose bear and raccoon photos appear on the “Deer-Resistant...” cover shown above right), as well as Third-World photographer Victor Englebert, nature photographer Dwight Kuhn, and photo researchers.

SHOOTS PLANNED,

GARDEN BUILDING PROJECTS: Below are projects I’d like to create and could shoot to publisher’s preferred style. Some of these projects have traditionally been built exclusively of pressure-treated wood. As noted, I would instead use combinations of naturally decay-resistant wood, steel electrical conduit bent attractively, or woodfiber-plastic composites, or plastic tubing.
*Arbors to Die For (low-cost do-it-yourself)
*Cold frames (naturally rot-resistant wood or woodfiber-plastic composites)
*Compost bins (electrical conduit poles surrounded by plastic mesh fencing)
*Fences & Deer Fencing (steel conduit & no-see mesh)
*Greenhouse (“Hoop House” of steel conduit)
*Hypertufa containers
*Live traps for pesky garden mammals
*Planter box
*Plant supports
*Portable potting bench
*Raised bed (woodfiber-plastic composites)
*Soil sieves (unique oval formed from electrical
conduit)
*Garden-tool cabinet
*Trellises
CRAFTS WITH PLANTS (gourd birdhouses,
wreaths, etc.)
DEER-PROOF FENCING TO DIE FOR (highly attractive,
low-cost structural supports for “invisible” mesh of
Soderstrom design)
DEER-PROOFING (fences, netting, repellents, “deer-resistant
plants, research scientists)
DISEASES (plants)
DIGGING POSTHOLES
ELECTRIC TOOLS (I am the author of Chainsaw Savvy
and would like to research and write a series called
YARDWORK WITHOUT GAS ENGINES. This could be a
series of test reports on the whole range of electric-
powered yard and garden tools, whether corded or
cordless. For example, electric chainsaws are quiet
running and create no noxious fumes. My electric
Stihl handled a 16-inch diameter maple, albeit at a
slower pace the bigger gas saws.
